2006 AMYA Region 4 Championship report
Sept 16-17, 2006 - Cincinnati, Ohio
by Pablo Godel

Everything started officially Friday afternoon during the early check-in. Participants weighed their boats, ranging from right on 100 ounces up to 106. But the fun really started a couple of hours later, when everyone got together at the Godel's home, to delight in some good food from Gabriela. Thanks to Andrew's beer arsenal, we had plenty to drink. After a great dinner, everybody went to sleep to recharge energy for some exciting and fast sailing. At least that is what everyone wanted.

Unfortunately for some (those who prefer stronger winds), the forecasted 5 to 10 mph winds didn't show up. In exchange, variable winds ranging from nothing to around 5mph  dominated the day. All in all, we were able to complete 16 races, where Brian Sims from Louisville, KY (new to the CR 914 but experienced RC sailor) took the lead by 3 points over Dick Martin from Columbia, MO. Local Pablo Godel completed the preliminary podium.

Late afternoon action on Saturday. The building in the background is where the famous Voice of America broadcasts originated during World War II (giving the park pond its name: VOA).

After the long and sunny race day (many showed their battle under the sun marks at dinner), participants and wives enjoyed a nice Italian meal at a local restaurant where we shared many stories.

Sunday proved to be more interesting with some stronger winds. Dave
Yardy and Andrew Schmidt (from Cleveland) had a very good day and both
surpassed Pablo Godel on the final run. In the meantime, Brian's Slipstream extended her lead over Dick's Mariah to secure his first Regional Championship in the CR 914 class. With the stronger winds, we were able to complete 17 races during the half day. After reaching the time limit, we presented the trophies, three very nice wooden CR 914 models hand-crafted in Uruguay.

This was our third event and we had a great deal of fun with very good racing and new friends. We hope all who participated share this feeling. It could not have been possible without the help of all our club members and volunteers. We look forward to hosting more regattas in the future. We also hope you will be able to come to Cincinnati next time to participate in our annual regatta.
