2006 CR 914 National Championships
October 20-22, 2006 San Diego Yacht Club
by Douglas McKerrow
San Diego Yacht Club's Model Sailing Fleet hosted the 2006 National Cham-pionship Regatta for the CR914 Class On October 21st and 22nd. The fleet comprised 25 boats with skippers hailing from as far away as Connecticut, Maryland, Arizona, Missouri and California. Longest distance traveled: Chuck Luscomb from Deep River, Connecticut.
All boats were measured and skippers signed in on Friday, a first for us. Two father and son competitors (Lowell and Danny North and Graham and Kevin Mattonen) represented another first. There were also two Adams, Phil and Larry (not related).

The regatta did not lack for wind. Before lunch on Saturday the boats sailed elegantly, leaning about about 20 degrees from vertical. After lunch the wind picked up and the boats going to weather were leaning about 20 degrees from the horizontal. The wind velocity Saturday afternoon was around 15 knots, and on Sunday it was closer to 20. This created a choppy wave form at intervals almost the length of the boats. Going to weather was tough, with distance lost at every tack. The downwind legs provided opportunities to observe a few rudders as bows got buried. Sheets of water flying down the deck was typical during both afternoons. Several boats retired during Sunday's racing carnage.

Our new CR 914 national champion is Chuck Luscomb from Connecticut. Dave Ramos (Maryland) placed second in the Gold Division, followed by Gregg Morton and David Ryan from the home fleet in San Diego. Brian Jobson from Connecticut took first place in the Silver Division, and Phil Adams from the Laguna Lakes fleet in California took first place among the Masters. Awards, half model plaques built by Jean Malthaner, were presented to first through fifth in the Gold Division, first through third in the Silver Division and first place among the Masters.

The overall weather for the regatta was warm and sunny during daytime and cool and dry in the evenings. Many thanks to the SDYC staff and numerous volunteers whose combined efforts ensured an enjoyable regatta that was fun for all. And that is what it is all about. It was a pleasure to be chairman for this event. Douglas Mc Kerrow.
